Geography.

Our vision:
At Co-op Academy Nightingale, we teach geography through units taught every other half term. We follow robust medium-term plans which set out a geographical ‘big question’, substantive knowledge, disciplinary skills and key vocabulary. The MTPs are sequential and progressive and aligned with the context of our school. We teach the geographical components of: places (locational/ place knowledge), people (human features/ respect), physical change (physical processes/ impact) and geographical fieldwork.
Through Geography lessons, we want our children to be curious, think critically and develop their understanding of the world around them and make sense of it through geographical studies in specific areas. Within our teaching and learning, we build up children’s knowledge of different places and, alongside this, develop their mutual respect for others. We want our children to understand global impact and their shared responsibility as global citizens.
We want our children to understand the impact actions have upon the world and believe it is crucial to teach them the knowledge of physical processes which cause changes to the world.
Geographical fieldwork is woven into our curriculum and we follow a specific cycle:
We use live marking to assess our children’s outcomes. Further in geography, children use self-evaluation tools ‘banners’ to assess their own outcomes against success criteria provided.
We seek to take opportunities to enrich our geographical curriculum through trips and experiences to broaden our children’s understanding.
