History.

Our vision:

At Co-op Academy Nightingale, we teach History through units taught every other half term. We follow robust medium-term plans which set out a historical ‘big question’, substantive knowledge, disciplinary skills and key vocabulary. The MTPs are sequential and progressive and aligned with the context of our school. At Nightingale we know the importance of thinking historically, have an understanding about time and chronology, can identify significant people and events and explain the cause and effect events have had over time. We believe that knowledge of the past is the key to understanding the present, which then gives the pupils the agency to ‘Lead tomorrow.’

Through History lessons, we want our children to be curious, think critically and develop their understanding of the world around them. Within our teaching and learning, we build up children’s knowledge of past events that have happened and use them to explain the effects they have had on the present.

We want our children to understand the impact upon the world's actions and believe it is crucial to teach them the knowledge of significant events and people in order to understand the world today.

Lesson structure is important to us at Nightingale and we follow our Teaching and Learning handbook to teach the curriculum.

We always include:

  • An introduction to the learning objective

  • High five

  • Introduction of key vocabulary

  • TLAC strategies to be utilised

  • Consideration of both substantive knowledge and disciplinary skills

In history lessons, we focus on addressing misconception in the moment through naming the lap and live marking. We also provide children with a self evaluation tool ‘banner’ which enables children to self evaluate their learning against success criteria.

We seek to take opportunities to enrich our historical curriculum through trips and experiences to broaden our children’s understanding. We assess our children’s learning through ongoing use of live marking and adapted mini quizzes provided to children at the completion of their unit.
